Hey,

Does anybody have the same problem as I have since today?

When I launch LBB, I get a virus warning that says:
Error 0x800700E1: Operation did not complete successfully because the files contains a virus.

AVG says it finds a "Win32:Evo-gen" virus.

Any idea?

99.99% sure this is a false positive.

If it is false positive other folks will have the same problem. Given the silence it might well be that you have picked up a virus. So there is plenty online help from AVG, first thing to do is make sure your virus files are bang up to date and do a full system scan.

Two things that you should do:
  1. Upload the suspect EXE to virustotal.com. That will check it with 50 or so virus scanners to give you a much better indication of whether it really is infected or not.

  2. Assuming virustotal confirms that it is a false-positive, submit the file to AVG (there should be a link on their website for this). They will then do their own checks and if they confirm it is safe they will either add it to a global whitelist or adjust their algorithms.
One other thing you can do, for your own peace of mind, is to right-click on LBB.exe in Windows (File) Explorer, select Properties then Digital Signatures. That will confirm (or otherwise) whether the file has been 'interfered with'.

False positives are an ever-increasing inconvenience, as the various competing anti-virus products try to outdo each other in detecting 'zero day' (i.e. never before seen) viruses. It is for this reason that, personally, I use only Microsoft's Windows Defender (on Windows 10) and have no desire to install one of the commercial products engaging in an 'arms race'.

Okay,

I did verify the file as suggested and sent a report to AVG.

Let's wait and see.

Thanks.

In the meantime you can of course add it to AVG's local whitelist, so you can continue to use LBB. There's every likelihood that the next time I update LBB it will be necessary to go round the same loop again. sad

I suppose we should be grateful that on Windows it's still permitted to install programs like LBB (or JB and LB for that matter) from 'unknown' sources or 'untrustworthy' vendors. Users of Apple products, in particular, (like iOS and Mac OS) are increasingly discouraged or prevented from running anything that hasn't gone through a formal - and strict - approval process and available only from the App Store.

Richard,

I actually went back to DEFENDER. For any reasons, I was sticking to AVG but you're right, DEFENDER does it very well in fact wink

For my own culture, may I ask you if you know what it can cost to get an application signed?

The Code Signing Certificate I use is US$ 75.00 for one year, $140 for two years or $195 for three years. I consider it good value considering there is no limit to the number of files you can sign. I use it for signing Windows, Mac OS-X and Android executables.

I think it's silly that Carl Gundel doesn't sign Just BASIC or Liberty BASIC. These days I expect all 'professional' software to be signed.
